(ds1). BL STC (Hungarian) 146. The Order of Friars Minor, called the Franciscans, was found in 1208 by St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226). The Friars' mission was to imitate the life of Jesus, preaching and offering service to the poor and infirm, funded only by charitable donations. After Francis' death there was disagreement within the order as to how to continue, with the preferring a more moderate interpretation of their mission within the lay community. In 1517, Pope Leo X decreed tat the two groups could be separated: the Observants continued a more severe way of life, administering to the poor and practicing self-denial, while the Conventuals established monasteries throughout the world, and were not for their work as educators. The Order encouraged personal scholarship, and many prominent theologians, philosophers, and scientists numbered among its members. In this work, Kreslinger has compiled various ecclesiastical documents, such as the Bulls of Leo X, to describe the history of the Order from its beginnings to 1731. Included is a list of Franciscan communities and their affiliation within the Order. A scarce and interesting work of early church history.
