Boards with triple gilt fillet paneling encompassing elaborate gilt rolls and tooled emblems of French military and cavalry. Spine with five gilt-ruled raised bands separating compartments richly tooled and ruled in gilt, including gilt spine lettering in compartment two and all other compartments with a gilt French military emblem. Exterior and binding: Very Good. Firm text block, cracking to foot of hinges and joints. Rear board a bit loose. Rubbed joints and extremities. Corners are not bumped but worn. Slight chipping to head and foot of spine. A few scuffs and dents to boards. Spine sun-darkened. Interior: The pages are clean, bright and white. The plates are strongly struck and in FINE condition. Tissue guards are toned and multiple have creases and/or tears. Toned endpapers and original paper wraps. Few signs of page handling. A few odd spots, mostly to back of a few plates. Sewn-in ribbon placeholder still attached. Binder name stamped on front blank and the bookplate of John Notman on another blank. All in all, a beautifully bound copy of an important French historical work with stunning photogravures ofÉdouard Detaille watercolors.
