Rimbaud ne rend témoignage que de lui-même et s'il décrit un monde, c'est, dans Les Illuminations, celui, transfiguré par son génie, que nul homme n'a jamais vu et ne verra jamais. Il a traversé le ciel poétique ainsi qu'un météore qui se désintègre au contact de l'atmosphère terrestre. La lumière brille toujours dans son œuvre, mais du météore lui-même, que reste-t-il, sinon quelques poussières éparses, retombées au hasard? Ce sont ces poussières qui, recueillies avec patience, emplissent ce sixième Album, établi dans la ligne de ses devanciers. Mallarmé a dit de Rimbaud qu'il fut un "passant considérable". C'est vrai, mais il n'a été considérable - et considéré - que longtemps après être passé. De son vivant, si l'on excepte Paul Verlaine et Léon Valade qui crurent à son génie, personne n'aurait imaginé que cet insupportable gamin pût devenir un jour l'un des dix premiers poètes français du XIXᵉ siècle. Pourtant, il est possible de raconter en images la vie terrestre du poète. Cette forme, presque filmée, à quelle autre vie conviendrait-elle mieux qu'à celle, prodigieusement mouvementée, d'Arthur Rimbaud? Au surplus, la jalonner de documents authentiques et d'évocations précises, c'est donner la biographie la plus objective, c'est-à-dire la plus exacte qu'il se puisse faire. La prolifération des exégèses et des interprétations personnelles a voilé la physionomie de Rimbaud. On a fait de lui une panoplie de myhes ; un éminent professeur l'a montré et s'est amusé à les détruire.
