First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First English-language edition. Translated by J.G.H. Preface by Andrew M. Milne. 12mo. ix, [10-11], 12-236, [2 ads] pp. Maroon cloth with cover titled in white and spine gilt. Boards a bit bowed and cover titling rubbed, modest wear, lacking the front fee endpaper, preliminary and terminal leaves very lightly foxed, and thin splits in the gutter neatly strengthened in two places, very good. Reportedly a bowdlerized English translation of *Aves Sin Nido* (1889) with a modified ending; The University of Texas Press published an emended translation in 1996 and a new translation was published by Oxford in 1998 (titled *Torn from the Nest*). University of Texas press describes the book as the "first major Spanish American novel to protest the plight of native peoples," and in his introduction to the 1998 edition, Antonio Cornejo Polar writes that once the book was subjected to serious literary criticism, it became known as "an essential element in the evolution of 'indigenism' in Latin America and in the transition from Romanticism to Realism." Clorinda Matto de Turner (1852-1909) was a noted Peruvian feminist, journalist, editor, and novelist. The first woman in the Americas to head a major newspaper, she was also editor of *El Peru Ilustrado*, the country's most influential intellectual journal. Because of her searing expose of small-town officials and priests, she was reportedly excommunicated from the Catholic church and burned in effigy. An important and uncommon book.
