False (illustrator). In-12°, pp. 224, legatura coeva in piena pelle dell'epoca, dorso a quattro nervi, titolo e fregi in oro al dorso. Lavoro di tarlo al margine inferiore delle prime tre carte. Seconda edizione di quest'opera di Maupertius sull'embriologia e la genetica. L'opera divisa in due parti argomenta contro la teoria biologica dominante della preformazione dell'embrione, l'autore sosteneva che l'embrione si forma per l'ordinato associarsi di particelle, le molecole organiche presenti nei semi dei due genitori e provenienti da ogni parte del loro corpo. Le teorie di Maupertuis dell'eredità e dell'epigenesia biparentale hanno sostanzialmente previsto quelle di Darwin, Mendel e de Vries quasi un secolo e mezzo prima, per questo motivo è considerato un precursore di Darwin e Mendel. Line engraving by Johann Philipp Haid (1730-1806). Augsburg c1745 after the painting by Robert Tournières (1737) preserved at St Malo. Fine portrait of the French scientist dressed in fur as an explorer on his Lapland expedition as head of the French Geodesic Mission (1736) to measure the length of a degree of arc of the meridian confirming Newton's theory that the Earth is flattened at the poles. He is shown with his left hand resting on a globe and his right hand pointing ahead. His published results of the expedition made him famous and he was elected a member of all the leading scientific societies listed beneath the portrait. He was invited to Berlin by Frederick the Great to become first president of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in 1746.

The first modern work on heredity, advancing the theory of biparental influence over inherited characteristics. The study consists of two dissertations, the first of which had been separately published two years earlier on the occasion of the appearance of an albino negro boy in Paris. The author's aim here is to account not only for this particular curiosity but also for more complex phenomena such as the dark skin of the inhabitants of the torrid zones, and the apparent paradox of so many different races descending from a single set of white parents. The treatment of recessive and dominant traits in this work is particularly far-seeing. As an aid to his research on heredity, the author always kept a large number of animals for breeding to obtain special characteristics. Maupertuis (1698-1759), French mathematician and philosopher, was a member of the Académie des Sciences,the first Frenchman to be elected to the Royal Society of London, and the first president of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Following a visit to England in 1728, he became France's foremost proponent of the Newtonian movement. He is considered a pioneer of genetics.His 'Venus Physique' is considered 'an early attempt at a materialistic explanation of species, anticipating Darwin by a century'. Some toning at beginning and end, otherwise a good, untrimmed copy with a short manuscript note in Spanish on front flyleaf, and the author's name added on the title in a contemporary French hand. Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (1698-1759), französischer Philosoph, Mathematiker, Physiker und Geograph, 1746 wurde er vom Friedrich dem Großen zum Präsidenten der preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften ernannt. Maupertuis war Anhäger der Newtonschen Physik. In der Philosophie verschrieb sich er dem britischen Empirismus, vor allem David Hume, dessen Sensualismus er auf die Mathematik übertrug.
