Jahrhunderts und schafft die Grenze zwischen alter und neuer Zeit. Blickt man zurück auf die Malerei des Rokoko, scheint es, dass diese an einem…Endpunkt angelangt war. Im Werk der Watteau, Chardin, Greuze und Fragonard hatte die mit der Renaissance begonnene Bildform ihre letzte künstlerische Vollendung gefunden. Der geregelte Bildungsgang in den Akademien hatte den Künstlern dieser Spätzeit alle Kenntnisse der Komposition, der Zeichnung und der malerischen Technik seit Raffael und Michelangelo, seit Tizian und Rubens vermittelt. In dreihundertjährigen Bemühungen waren die letzten Möglichkeiten der klassischen Bild-Erfindung ausgewertet worden. Die verschiedenen Bildgattungen der Historie, des Genre, des Stillebens und der Landschaft hatten ihre Regeln erhalten und waren bis in jede Einzelheit ihrer Aufgabe und Wirkung durchdacht. Die Spiele der räumlichen Illusion, der Reichtum aufeinandergestimmter Farben, kunstvollste Komposition und unerschöpfliche Einfälle der bildschaffenden Phantasie fanden sich zusammen, um den Meisterwerken dieser Kunst eine Vollkommenheit zu geben, wie sie die Malerei nur selten erreicht hat. Auch in der Schweiz stand die künstlerische Kultur im 18. Jahrhundert auf einem Höhepunkt. Die Menschen und ihre Gegenstände gehörten voll dem gesellschaftlichen Leben, das in den Bindungen und Freiheiten des Umgangs, in den Förmlichkeiten der Etikette und der Erziehung ebenso gesellig wie verpflichtend war. Die zahlreichen Porträts sind Zeugnisse der nach aussen gewandten, von der gemeinsamen Norm bestimmten Kultur. Brustbilder mit den Zeichen von Würden und Rang, künden sie den Stand des Dargestellten und die ihm gemässe gesellschaftliche Form. Ihrer Dauer gegenüber hat das vergängliche und sich verändernde Wesen des Individuums wenig Bedeutung. Von den Porträtisten der Zeit - den Handmann, Huber, Liotard - wurde nicht die Erfassung seelischer und körperlicher Eigenart verlangt; es genügte, wenn der Dargestellte sich im Besitz von Charakter und Eleganz, von bürgerlicher Tüchtigkeit und gesellschaftlicher Anmut zeigte. Wurde das Bildnis gepflegt, um den regimentsfähigen Familien in Bern, den reichen Kaufleuten in Basel, Zürich und Winterthur mit dem Erinnerungsbild die Tradition zu erhalten, so waren die Kleinmeister für das behäbige Bürgertum der Städte und für die zahlreichen Frem-den mit der Herstellung von Landschaftsbildern beschäftigt. Die Erzeugnisse dieser ersten schweizerischen Landschaftsmalerei zeigen das Mittelland und das Voralpengelände als Stim-mung und Umwelt eines ersehnten urtümlichen Hirten- und Sennendaseins, in dem sich die Berge, die Wahrzeichen des Landes, fern in den Hintergründen und ohne Schrecknisse breiten.
