Rare Shoulder Strap set of five Civil War histories printed by Twain's publishing house in its short-lived but impressive decade of operation. Octavo, eight volumes bound in full tan sheep skin with gilt titles and ruling to the spine in five compartments within raised bands, red and black spine labels, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, tissue-guarded frontispiece portraits to each volume, illustrated with steel engravings, maps, and woodcuts. The set features: a first edition of Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant (Two volumes, 1885-1886); a first edition of McClellan's Own Story: The War for the Union, the Soldiers Who Fought It, and His Relations to It and to Them (1887); a first edition of Tenting on the Plains: or Gen. Custer in Kansas and Texas (1887); a first edition of Personal Memoirs of P. H. Sheridan (Two volumes, 1888); and a fourth edition of Memoirs of Gen. W. T. Sherman (Two volumes, 1891). In very good to good condition with rubbing to the extremities and light toning to the title pages of each volume, evidence of interior hinge repair and library stamps to the first and last leaves of the Sherman and Custer memoirs, a gift inscription to the first volume of Sheridan's memoirs, darkening to the top edge of both volumes of the Sheridan memoir, library checkout card and pocket to the rear pastedown of the Custer volume. An exceptionally rare set, especially in this condition. Featuring the finest of contemporary Civil War histories, the Great War Library "Shoulder Strap" series pays tribute to Mark Twain's brief but impressive venture into publishing. In 1884, Twain joined with Charles Webster, who was married to Twain's niece, in an effort, at first, to publish "his own books, and he began successfully with Huckleberry Finn in 1885. Almost fortuitously he got the contract to publish U.S. Grant's Memoirs [1885-86]â"a huge success . . . Other Civil War generals preparing their memoirs naturally hoped to appear with their great commander" (Paine, 831).

McClellan, with his armoral bookplate on the front endpaper and signed by him on the title page. While studying the military campaigns of Marlborough in 1860, McClellan wrote: ".the old profession stirs my blood & delights me more than any other pursuit.it is war on a large scale that interests me." (Letter to Mary Ellen Marcy, Jan. 25, 1860) George B. McClellan (1826-1885) was accepted at the United States Military Academy in 1842, at the age of 15. As a student, he was focused on the history of warfare, with a "growing personal libary that already numbered several hundred volumes." McClellan continued his studies after graduating second in his class from West Point, expanding his library to over 500 volumes, focusing on the campaigns of "Caesar, Marlborough, and Frederick the Great." Upon his death in 1885, the majority of his library was bequeathed to his children and the Library of Congress. This is one of a handful of volumes in private collections. Signed.

A unique association copy of Louis Philippe d'Orléans' work in favor of trade unions, inscribed by him to former Union General George B. McClellan. Prince Philippe volunteered for the Union Army during the Civil War, and served on McClellan's staff for almost a year. His inscription reads: "Au Général McClellan souvenir de son ancien aide de camp, Louis Philippe D'Orleans." Prince Philippe, a historian and author, wrote several works of history, including the present example and a multi-part history of the Civil War, titled A History of the Civil War in America. His experiences on the staff of General McClellan greatly informed Prince Philippe's work, generally considered a standard text on the War. The present work is a nice association copy between Prince Philippe and his one-time boss during the early years of the conflict. Publisher's printed wrappers. Wrappers and spine chipped, front wrapper detached, 20th-century bookplate on verso of front wrapper, light occasional foxing. Good.
McCLELLAN, George B. Report on the Organization and Campaigns of the Army of the Potomac: To which is Added an Account of the Campaign in Western VIrginia, with Plans of Battle-Fields. New York: Sheldon & Company, Publishers, 1864. 480pp. plus four maps (including folding frontispiece). Original brown cloth stamped in blind, spine gilt. Spine slightly sunned, light rubbing. Light foxing, otherwise internally clean. Inscribed by McClellan to Samuel Barlow on front free endpaper (see below). A very good copy. BARLOW SALE 1522 (this copy). SABIN 43018. DORNBUSCH III 1554. NEVINS I, p. 10 (ref). rare and significant presentation copy, inscribed by McClellan on the front free endpaper to "S.L.M. Barlow, With the warm regards of his sincere friend George B. McClellan, March 30 /64." Samuel Latham Mitchill Barlow was an accomplished and notable book collector, as well as an Illinois Democrat and a lifelong friend of McClellan's. On a personal level, Barlow even helped McClellan write his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination and served as his de facto campaign manager, more or less running the campaign while McClellan attempted to distance himself from politics. Barlow was also the publisher of the New York World, a staunchly Democratic newspaper which remained critical of the Lincoln administration throughout the war and did much to promote McClellan's 1864 presidential run. This is the expanded edition of McClellan's official report concerning his operations from July 1861 to November 1862, following the original 1862 Washington edition (of 242 pages) that was issued as.Letter of the Secretary of War, Transmitting Report on the Organization of the Army of the Potomac. The present edition was produced as part of McClellan's 1864 presidential bid. The work contains substantial information about the initial organization of the Army of the Potomac, and has been expanded with additional details of the Peninsular Campaign, the campaign in West Virginia, and his account of the Battle of Antietam. The folding map depicts the battle lines and movements of Antietam; the three single-page maps show McClellan's moves through the peninsula, the siege of Yorktown, and the assault on Richmond. In typical McClellan fashion, despite the fact this began as an official document, the descriptions of the campaigns in this volume are closer to a memo.
