First edition of Albee's quietly powerful adaptation of McCuller's novella. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Edward Albee on the title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Photograph of McCullers and Albee courtesy of Look. "Edward Albee has converted Carson McCullers' strange, tender prose poem, The Ballad of the Sad Cafe, into a play flecked with weird, halting poetry. Their art has joined to reveal the terrible and dim face of a shattered unnatural love" (The New York Times). "A shimmering poem of dark beauty" (Emory Lewis).

First edition. Inscribed to "Eddie and Dotty" by the author on an adhered label bearing the logo of the Riverside Press. McCullers' novella follows, in her characteristically Gothic and semi-autobiographical style, a young woman and the tapestry of her family during a hot Georgia summer. Full pale yellow cloth over boards. Soiling to covers and some rubbing to corners; supplied dust wrapper shows slight chipping and typical fading to spine. Overall a good copy in very good dust wrapper.

First edition, first printing, presentation copy of the author's final novel, inscribed by her: "For Rebecca, Love, Carson". It is quite probable that the recipient is the writer and academic Rebecca Pitts (1905-1983), who was part of an intimate group of residents at the Yaddo writers' retreat in upstate New York, along with the author, during the summer of 1943. Pitts and McCullers were photographed together at Yaddo that summer, and their "untamed personal behaviour" at the retreat notably scandalized the novelist Katherine Anne Porter, who described the pair as "Dreadful Creatures" (Wald, p. 124; Titus, p. 167). McCullers and Pitts had already worked together before Yaddo while Pitts was an editor at Decision Magazine in New York City between 1941 and 1942, and the author had called upon Pitts during a moment of emotional distress in 1941, asking for help in the weeks following difficult divorce proceedings from her adulterous husband (Carr, p. 184). "Riding High: Yaddo and the Lecture Circuit - 1943-1944", Ars Femina, available online; Virginia Spencer Carr, The Lonely Hunter: A Biography of Carson McCullers, 2003; Mary Titus, The Ambivalent Art of Katherine Anne Porter, 2005; Alan M. Wald, The Literary Left in the Era of the Cold War, 2012. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine in gilt, and to front cover in gilt on black ground, top edge yellow, dark yellow endpapers. With dust jacket with circular glassine window. A very good copy, extremities rubbed, top edge faded, minor tape discolouration to free endpapers, in unclipped jacket, tape residue to verso, spine ends slightly rubbed, small closed tears to front panel top edge and front flap fold, a sharp, very good copy indeed.

Condition: Near fine in very good jacket. Inscribed New Directions reissue of McCullers's second novel, full of that Sense of Dreadfulness defined by Tennessee Williams as characteristic of the Southern Gothic school. First published in 1941 and set on a Georgia army base beset with unspoken sexual obsessions, strange hates, and sudden outbreaks of violence, REFLECTIONS was once criticized as morbid and unwholesome, now recognized as one of the great gay classics of the early 20th century. In his new introduction to this New Classics Series edition from New Directions, Williams champions it as "one of the purest and most powerful of those works which are conceived in that Sense of The Awful which is the desperate black root of nearly all significant modern art," superior in artistic control to her celebrated debut, braver than Proust, nobler in spirit than any since Melville. Uncommon inscribed. 7'' x 4.5''. Original tan cloth. In original unclipped ($1.50) blue and tan dust jacket designed by Al Lustig. 182, [4] pages. Inscribed by McCullers on front free endpaper: "For Jack and Georgia / Carson." Single pencil underline to one page. Some soil to jacket spine, top edge of text block. Light chipping and wear to jacket with a few small closed tears.

First edition of McCullers' classic coming-of-age story like no other about a young girl's fascination with her brother's wedding, which has been compared to The Catcher in the Rye and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, âFor Harrell with love Carson.â Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. An exceptional example, first editions are uncommon signed and inscribed. Twelve-year-old Frankie is utterly, hopelessly bored with life until she hears about her older brotherâs wedding. Bolstered by lively conversations with her family maid, Berenice, and her six-year-old cousinâ"not to mention her own unbridled imaginationâ"Frankie takes on an overly active role in the wedding, hoping even to go, uninvited, on the honeymoon, so deep is her desire to be a member of something larger, more accepting than herself. It is the basis for the Broadway production directed by Harold Clurman. It opened on January 5, 1950 at the Empire Theatre, where it ran for 501 performances. The cast included Ethel Waters, Julie Harris, and debuted Brandon deWilde, a seven-year-old second-grader at the time. Waters, Harris, and deWilde reprised their stage roles, with Arthur Franz, Nancy Gates, and Dickie Moore joining the cast, for the 1952 film version. The screenplay was adapted by Edna and Edward Anhalt and directed by Fred Zinnemann. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for Julie Harris.

First edition, first printing, a preeminent presentation copy inscribed by the author on the title page, "For my beloved Boots, always [xxxxx]", with a drawing of an arrow-pierced heart. "Boots" was McCullers's petname for her cousin, Jordan Massee. Her biographer Virginia Carr states that theirs was "perhaps the longest and most constant and loyal relationship" of McCullers's entire life. We can trace no other signed or inscribed copies of this title to have appeared in commerce. Despite both growing up in Georgia, McCullers and Massee weren't properly acquainted until 1941, when they were both living in New York. McCullers met Massee by chance, through mutual friends. "'She was very quiet then', he recalled. 'She played the piano for me, and I remember that when her housemates came in she introduced me, saying 'This is my precious cousin'" (ibid., p. 164). Over the next few years Massee became McCullers's closest confidant, holding a unique position in her affections and dependencies. She told him everything, from her need for women's love and companionship to the tortuous details of her marriage to Reeves. They were two sides of the same coin, and understood each other perfectly, differing only on what Massee called "Carson's struggle to survive and my tendency to self-sacrifice" (cited ibid. p. 329). As McCullers's physical health deteriorated, so did her dependency on his presence, and even the acquiescent Massee admitted that "Carson was a demanding companion" (cited ibid. p. 325). "No one in her entire experience - not Marguerite or Mary Tucker or Reeves or Annemarie Clarac-Schwarzenbach or Edwin Peacock or David Diamond or Tennesee Williams - approached the relationship that was uniquely theirs until Mary Mercer [Carson's doctor in her final years] came into her life" (ibid, p. 322). The high point of their relationship was the spring of 1949, when Masse invited Carson to stay at his at his home, The House of the Salutation. "It was here that Carson and Masse came together as brother and sister in spirit, cementing the bond that remained unbroken for the remaining 18 years of Carson's life" (ibid.). Sweet as a Pickle was published three years before McCullers's death. Her ailments made it difficult to sustain long periods of writing, and this title was comprised of short verses she wrote for the children of her lawyer, Floria Lasky. It was published on 10 May 1964. In November McCullers wrote her will, which included Massee to the tune of $1,000. She later removed him during a brief rift over mistaken loyalty, and despite their quick reconciliation, inadvertently failed to reinstate him. Virginia Spencer Carr, The Lonely Hunter: a Biography of Carson McCullers, 1976. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in green, pictorial design on front cover in green, green endpapers. With dust jacket. Housed in a custom brown morocco-backed cloth box. Illustrations on title page and throughout in black, green, and orange. Slight rubbing, mark on top edge; spine panel toned, mark on front panel, short closed tear at head of front fold, a few nicks: a fine copy in near-fine jacket.

Condition: Very good. Two typed letters signed on three leaves of McCullers' printed letterhead, each measuring 5 3/4" x 7 1/2" Old folds, one leaf with a small marginal chip, else about fine. Two letters on Andre Bay, translator and adaptor to the French theatre of her play The Member of the Wedding expressing dissatisfaction with the translation and her "decision to withold approval of the present text". It seems that Bay was under the impression she had approved the translation, and had moved forward with production, including selecting a cast. Both letters to "Dear Andre" maintain a tone that is both polite and friendly, but unyielding were artistic matters are concerned. Bay must have sent a strongly worded letter when he found out the the translation had not been approved, as McCullers' first letter begins: "Your last letters have left me feeling as if I have two heads and a black heart. My mirror and my conscience tell me that this is not true." McCullers goes on to state her case: "First of all, I have no recollection of having approved this translation.Since I neither read or understand French well enough for such a purpose. I realy don't see how it could have been reported to you that I had 'Heard' the French text and approved of it.I arrived at my decision to withhold approval of the present text after having it read by a French girl who is a close friend of mine, who is quite familiar with all my work. Her opinion was that [it] was too literal and that it was lacking in poetry and grace." She closes graciously and apologetically, writing that, "far from slapping your face" she is having the text read again by an even more quaified individual. She expresses regret that Bay had "proceeded thus far with [his] business arrangements before seeking [her] approval of this present text," but confidence that everything will be 'ironed out to our mutual satisfaction." The second letter, sent about a week later, likely in response to another letter from Bay, notes "please know that my every effort, including this note, is directed, these days towards a resolution of this problem which will protect your interests and my literary reputation." She cites Janet Flanner's opinion that the French dialogue is "lacking in the poetry which stems from their special language "along with other criticisms, in some detail, she goes on to write "We are not objecting to the faithfulness of the translation but to the spirit of the translation. I want to say here, Andre, that I never compromised my artistic judgment on Broadwayand I cannot bring myself to make allowances for any other first class production." McCullers writes that perhaps Albert Camus ad Maurice Coindreau might be "persons who might do the small amount of work still required". In the final paragraph, she expresses regret that she was not consulted about the cast, but has decided to look forward instead of backward. A production of The Member of the Wedding, translated by Andre Bay and William Hope, premiered at the Theatre Alliance Francaise in Decemeber 1958. Josyane Savigneau, in Carson McCuller: a Life notes that the play had an extremely brief run [[and] garnered only crtitcal rather than popular acclaim." She also notes, "the conflict put an end to the congenial relations between Andre Bay and Carson."(p279). Interestingly, Savigneau seems to agree with Bay's description of events: Composed by Bay, the script had originally been approved by Carson. Now she was suddenly dissatisfied with it" p279. Two incisive letters from the pen of a major writer whose significant correspondence seldom appears in the marketplace, shedding light on the difficulties of international artistic collaboration, and her refusal to compromise her artistic judgment.

With a note laid in from the author which reads, "With all good wishes from Carson McCullers Thanks for the good time at the Inn." Fine in a near fine dust jacket with some light professional restoration. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very sharp example, rare and desirable signed. With the publication of her first novel, The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter, Carson McCullers, became a literary sensation. With its profound sense of moral isolation and its compassionate glimpses into its characters' inner lives, the novel is considered McCullers' finest work, an enduring masterpiece. "To me the most impressive aspect of The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter is the astonishing humanity that enables a white writer, for the first time in Southern fiction, to handle Negro characters with as much ease and justice of those of her own race. This cannot be accounted for stylistically or politically; it seems to stem from an attitude toward life." (Richard Wright) "A remarkable book . . . [McCullers] writes with a sweep and certainty that are overwhelming" (The New York Times). Chosen by Modern Library as one of 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First edition. Octavo. Modest fraying at the top and base of the yellow cloth boards, darkened at the base of the spine, a good or better copy lacking the dust jacket. Affixed to the front fly is a complimentary slip from the Riverside Press, with their logo, Inscribed by McCullers to Langston Hughes: "For Langston with love Carson." McCullers first met Hughes at Yaddo, an artists' community located in Saratoga Springs, New York, during the summer of 1942. Virginia Spencer Carr in her biography of McCullers, *The Lonely Hunter*, notes of McCullers: "One of her favorites, Langston Hughes stayed until November. Hughes and composer Nathaniel Dett were two of the first blacks ever to be in residence at Yaddo. and Carson thoroughly enjoyed her friendship with them over the summer. Yaddo hosted only a small number [of artists] in the summer of 1943. and Carson was especially pleased to see Langston Hughes back. Carson proudly elaborated how she and Langston Hughes had spent many profitable evenings at craps during his two summers there." The glue affixing the slip has caused some moderate wrinkles on the front fly. McCullers later adapted this novel into a play that opened on Broadway with Julie Harris and Ethel Waters and won numerous awards. Waters and Harris then recreated their Broadway roles in the 1952 Fred Zinneman film, with Harris nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. A significant association copy displaying McCullers' unabashed affection for Hughes. Ex-library of Virginia Spencer Carr.
