Pitcher Lindy debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals (195562) and went on to play for the Chicago Cubs (1963-65), San Francisco Giants (1966-68), New York Yankees (1968-73) and Kansas City Royals (1974-75); his younger brother Von, also a pitcher, caused a sensation when he pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout in his debut game with the Cardinals in 1957, but his career only lasted two seasons. Unusual pair of AQsS, each an irregularly-trimmed, roughly rectangular 6½" X 3¼" and 7" X 3" (respectively) and each with several tape stains along the margins -- see image. Very good. Both brothers were known to be religious -- in later life Lindy became a Church of Christ minister -- and early in their careers each was asked by an admirer to write out a favorite Bible verse. Lindy writes out Ecclesiastes 12:1 in blue ballpoint: "Remember also your creator in the days of / your youth, before the evil days come, and / the years draw nigh, when you will say, / 'I have no pleasure in them';" noting "(Revised Standard Version)" and signing at the close. Von writes out Roman 1:16 in blue ballpoint: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel; for it is the power / of God unto Salvation to every one that believeth; to the / Jew first, and also to the Greek," signing at the close. Undated, but both are penned circa 1960. Quite unusual.
