Add to basketQuarter-cloth and boards, top edge gilt, 4to, xlvii, 234 pp, 329 facs. Over 300 entries. Bibliographical Society Illustrated Monographs No. XXI. Ferguson described this as "forming a complementary volume to McKerrow's [Printers' & Publishers' Devices in England & Scotland 1485-1640] and adding greatly to the usefulness of that work as an aid to the identification of anonymously printed books, and, from evidence of progressive deterioration, to the assigning of others without date to approximate years of publication. Over 300 borders or 'compartments' .are reproduced in facsimile, with lists of all the books in which the compilers have found them - as distinguished from the earlier work, which gives in general only earliest and latest instances of use of the devices by printers and booksellers through whose hands they passed - and notes on the foreign originals from which many were copied (as well as on five actual foreign blocks imported into England)." Bookplate on front pastedown endpaper, spine heavily stained, upper fore-edge corner of front board (about 2 cm x 1 cm) bruised and torn and in danger of disappearing, otherwise Good.
