Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. This book, originally published in 1963, is a compilation of over 100 excerpts from printed and manuscript diaries, journals, letters, official reports, and accounts in newspapers and periodicals that were written during the Civil War. These personal accounts generate a deeper understanding of the Civil War period by allowing those who lived through the war to present in their own words the story of this great struggle. 468 pages, including an index. Book is clean and binding is tight. There are two small horizontial creases at the bottom of the spine that go less than half way across the spine, it appears to be a printing imperfection. There are no vertical creases on the spine. A quite nice copy of an increasingly scarce work, available for immediate shipment, carefully packed in a sturdy box.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Volume 37 in the James Sprunt Studies in History and Political Science(xvii), ix, 412 pp., index, bibl., new intro. "The reading of this book will add immeasurably to one's understanding of the evolution of American civil government in Alabama," states Rucker Agee in Twenty Alabama Books. Professor McMillan discusses the origin and growth of Alabama's six constitutions adopted successively in 1819, 1861, 1865, 1868, 1875, and 1901. All six constitutional conventions and constitutions are studied in their historical setting, and each is related to the existing public opinion, and to the political, economic, and social history of the state. Since Alabama's history, constitutional needs, and problems were common to the South, a history of its constitutions is also a case study in Southern constitutional development.
