Folio. 12 x 8.5 inches. [xvi + i] + 245 pp. Bound in original buff cloth, gilt, with gilt block of seal. Minor wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and vignette in preface and by 166 sepia plates of buildings with captions, numbered in text. Pictorial endpapers. Decorated by vignette of island seal at head of title. Part I is a reprint of the 1875 account of the island, including its history, topography and natural history, first published in 1875, with an additional paper read in 1906. The 1875 edition was illustrated by the author's wife on the island's geology, fauna and flora. John Charles Melliss (1835-1910), born on the island where his father was an artillery officer. He trained as an engineer and, as an officer of the Royal Engineers, served as government surveyor of St Helena, 1860-1871, until he was made redundant and returned to the UK. He had also published Views of St. Helena in 1857. This edition is edited and illustrate with views of island buildings by Robin Castell (b.1941), author of St. Helena, Island Fortress, 1977.
