Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The stories included in this collection are classics of children's literature and have been cherished by generations of Portuguese children. The author is one of Portugal's greatest poets and, like her poetry, these stories are filled with her delight and pleasure in nature, gardens and the sea, as well as her keen sense of the magical. Among other things, we encounter dwarves, diminutive little girls who live on the sea bed, plants that come alive at night, a tree that lives on long after it has been felled, and a pilgrim who discovers much more than the Holy Land. Her themes are, above all, loyalty and friendship. This is the first time these stories have been translated into English. Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (1919-2004) was brought up in a wealthy Catholic family and remained true to her faith until her death, although she was also always fiercely critical of the repressive right-wing Salazar regime. Introduced by her nanny to the joys of poetry and story-telling, Sophia published several collections of poems, two volumes of short stories and nine children's stories, which she wrote originally for her own children. She became Portugal's most acclaimed poet and was the first woman to be awarded Portugal's highest literary honour, the Premio Camoes. The stories in this collection are classics of children's literature and have been cherished by generations of Portuguese children. This is the first time these stories have been translated into English. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Take Six is a celebration of six remarkable Portuguese women writers: Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Agustina Bessa-Luis, Maria Judite de Carvalho, Helia Correia, Teolinda Gersao and Lidia Jorge. They are all past-mistresses of the short story form, and their subject-matter ranges from finding one's inner fox to a failed suicide attempt to a grandmother and grandson battling the wind on a beach. Stories and styles are all very different, but what the writers have in common is their ability to take everyday life and look at it afresh, so that even a trip on a ferry or an encounter with a stranger or a child's attempt to please her father become imbued with mystery and humour and sometimes tragedy. Relatively few women writers are translated into English, and this anthology is an attempt to rectify that imbalance and to introduce readers to some truly captivating tales from Portugal. AUTHOR: Margaret Jull Costa has been a literary translator for over thirty years and has translated works by novelists such as ECa de Queiroz, Jose Saramago, Javier MarIas and Bernardo Atxaga, as well as poets such as Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and Ana LuIsa Amaral. Her work has brought her many prizes, and, in 2014, she was awarded an OBE for services to literature. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Add to basketpaperback. Condition: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
