Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. An essential text in Confucian thoughtMencius was one of the great philosophers of ancient China, second only in influence to Confucius, whose teachings he defended and expanded. The Mencius, in which he recounts his dialogues with kings, dukes and military men, as well as other philosophers, is one of the Four Books that make up the essential Confucian corpus. It takes up Confucius's theories of jen, or goodness and yi, righteousness, explaining that the individual can achieve harmony with mankind and the universe by perfecting his innate moral nature and acting with benevolence and justice. Mencius' strikingly modern views on the duties of subjects and their rulers or the evils of war, created a Confucian orthodoxy that has remained intact since the third century BCE. Couverture souple. Condition: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Paris 2003. 1 Volume/1. -- Comme Neuf -- Broché . Format 21 x 14 cm . ------- 212 pages. ********************** "" Connaît-on encore aujourd'hui Mencius (372-289 av. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Richard Wilhelm (illustrator). 1st Edition. Rare First Edition (1916 on the title page). In German. From the Chinese ( Aus Dem Chinesischen Verdeutscht Und Erläutert Von Richard Wilhelm). Illustrated by Richard Wilhelm. Interestingly designed black and yellow card covers. Second front end paper with a Chinese motif of the lion within a circle. The title page has a tissue guard (no tear) with printed German translation fitting right over (aligning with) the Chinese characters on the facing and protected page. The verso of this page with the Chinese characters is a frontispiece image of Mencius with a very detailed decorated border surrounding it. The facing title page in German has the same border (see photo). You can see the covers in the photos provided. The front and rear are quite clean. The spine has darkening. There is light wear at the spine ends. The edges and corners are in very good shape. So are the page edges. The top page edge is black. The book is solidly bound. The pages are nicely tight. There is one exception, the illustrated first front end paper has detached, not from the juncture (there is a thin vertical piece of the end paper remaining at the juncture). There are no repairs, nothing unoriginal in the book. Both the front and rear covers are solidly bound. Neither has any give when pulled upon from the side. There is toning at the margins of both illustrated inside covers and both of the illustrated first and rear end papers. There is a tiny square faded stamp off the bottom edge of the title page (see photo). There seems to be a few letters inside, maybe roman numerals, maybe not. There are no other stamps or markings anywhere in the book. There is a very lightly penciled interesting-looking name at the top corner of the page with the circled lion, very hard to make out the name, something like Rue de Rlouey with the accent on the 'e in 'Rue'. Just a guess. Probably wrong. There is no other writing to be found anywhere in the book. The pages are somewhat toned, uniformly toned, but are exceptionally clean. I'm not seeing any soiling. I'm also not seeing any creasing. And there are no attachments. There is a gold ribbon which is in good condition with just a little darkening at the top of it. That covers condition. 'The Mencius is a collection of anecdotes and conversations of the Confucian thinker and philosopher Mencius on topics in moral and political philosophy, often between Mencius and the rulers of the various Warring States. Mencius was a disciple of one of the students of Zisi, a grandson of Confucius, and the Mencius records his travels and audiences with the various rulers of the Warring States period, his students, and his other contemporaries. A number of linguistic and textual clues suggest that the text was not written by Mencius himself but by his disciples, probably during the late 4th century BC. Buchstabenlimit erreicht. Google überse.
