Illustrations by Honoré Guilbeau (illustrator). The Centenary Edition. The Shaving of Shagpat is poet and author George Meredith's (1828-1909) first novel. Although it did not sell well when it was first published in 1855, this humorous fantasy story has since been published in various editions. As George Eliot writes in her review of the novel, ".in exuberance of imagery, in picturesque wildness of incident, in significant humour, in aphoristic wisdom, The Shaving of Shagpat is a new Arabian Night" (xiii). This edition published for members of the Limited Editions club is signed by illustrator Honoré Guilbeau, a painter, printmaker, and illustrator. Heritage Press commissioned her for illustrations in The Shaving of Shagpat after she won their competition for her work on The Adventures of Hajii Baba. With a preface by Sir Francis Meredith Meynell. Copy #66 of 500. Signed by illustrator Guilbeau in rear colophon. Minor rubbing to leather spine tips, else fine in near fine publisher's slipcase with gentle rubbing and scuffing, localized on top edge. Decorated paper boards with black leather spine, top edge stained black, in publisher's slipcase.
