Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. A painter whose father was an engraver and publisher of the same name, Matthaus Merian (16211687) published this remarkable group of unusual and highly imaginative animal illustrations. This copyright-free collection includes a large and fascinating selection of engravings that illustrate scientific specimens and legendary creatures all meticulously reproduced from an extremely rare eighteenth-century edition. Carefully arranged into six major divisions (quadrupeds, snakes, mollusks and crustaceans, fish, birds, and insects), approximately 1,300 copyright-free images include realistic and fanciful portrayals of a varied array of real animals, in addition to such imaginary creatures as unicorns, dragons, basilisks, harpies, griffins, and other mythical beasts. Identifying captions in Latin accompany many of the illustrations. Commercial artists, illustrators, and craftspeople will find a host of uses for these lovingly detailed engravings: as book and magazine illustrations and as attention-getting graphics ideal for enhancing flyers, brochures, newsletters, and any number of other print projects. Art lovers and antiquarians anyone with an interest in the art and ideas of an earlier era will enjoy browsing through these wonderful antique images. Reprint of 123 plates from the R. & G. Wetstenios, Amsterdam, 1718 edition. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. THIS BOOK IS IN GERMAN (but the images are its main content). Mit einer Einleitung von Friedrich Schnack. Panoramas of 46 European cities and their surroundings, drawn from the 1695 edition of Archontologia Cosmica and the Topographia by the Swiss engraver Matthaeus Merian (the Elder) earlier in the 17th century. The engravings are on fold-out panoramic pages. 8" x 10-1/2" (~20 cm x 26.5 cm), pictorial boards, dust soil to edges, Paris fold-out was creased in the wrong place and protrudes slightly. The condition "fair" is a compromise between the "good" interior and "poor" binding: the backstrip is entirely missing and the paper over boards is ragged along where the backstrip was. Gift inscription on the half-title, other pages unmarked.
