First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good dj. Illustrated by (cover and dj) Carlos Merida (illustrator). First Edition. [some external staining to cloth, covers slightly warped and the book twisted just a bit on its axis; jacket age-toned and lightly soiled, small tears and minor paper loss at several corners, a small and sort of ugly pull-tear at front hinge]. (B&W halftone photographs, maps) Comprehensive guide to seeing Mexico "by plane, car, train, bus and boat," by the American anthropologist and ethnographer, who moved to Mexico in 1922, spent most of the rest of her life there, and was, to say the least, steeped in its culture. She founded and published the journal "Mexican Folkways" in 1926 and through it and numerous books and articles, she was a kind of one-woman ambassador to the rest of the world (the U.S. in particular) for Mexican art and folk culture (among her friends were artists Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Jose Clemente Orozco and others) -- and of course did all she could to promote tourism to the country. The first version of this tour guide was published in 1932 and went through numerous printings, both in Mexico and the U.S. In addition to details on many towns and cities, suggested road trips, etc., about one-quarter of the book consists of ads for hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, and other Mexican businesses. NOISBN.
