This volume covers the first part of the expedition, to the crossing of the Rocky Mountains in Montana. Edited by Nicholas Biddle, with an introduction by June Namias and a foreword by John Bakeless. With numerous facsimiles of journal entries, including several sketch maps. Sandglass leaflet laid in (Norwalk, no number). --- In full plum cloth-covered boards with image of Lewis and Clark and a mountain scene in gilt to cover, spine titling & decorations also in gilt. Volume housed in dark red paper-covered slipcase. --- Overall, in excellent shape: clean, unmarked and bright but with a little dusty soiling to cloth, some fading to spine & spine titling. Structurally sound slipcase also with slight soiling, otherwise undamaged.
