The subject of the letter is the surgeon Henry William Robert Davey (1798-1870), son of surgeon Henry Sallows Davey (1781-1855) of Beccles, who also studied under Sir Charles Bell at the Hunterian School of Medicine in Great Windmill Street, London. 1p, 8vo. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to edge on blank reverse. An attractive document, with 'MIDDLESEX HOSPITAL.' at the head, above an engraving of the frontage of the hospital. The printed form beneath this has text in engraved copperplate, with an ornate heading, signed by the two one above the other at bottom right. Reads (with manuscript in square brackets): 'We hereby Certify that | [Mr. Henry W. R. Davey] | [diligently] attended [three] courses of our Lectures on the theory and practice of Midwifery, and on the diseases of Women and Children. - | In these Lectures he has been fully instructed in the management of Labours and on the use and application of the different Instruments necessary in the practice of Midwifery. | Saml Merriman M.D. | Hugh Ley M.D -'.
