Mesonero ridiculiza a los viajeros franceses,… y con el desenfado y la ironía que le caracterizaron traza un vistoso e inusual cuadro de algunos países europeos y de sus costumbres. Apartándose de la pauta seguida anteriormente por los escritores de viajes, y siguiendo su estilo propio y su manera analítica peculiar, acertó a trazar, no una descripción árida y descarnada del país visitado, ni tampoco una guía o itinerario de pueblos tan próximos y conocidos, sino un cuadro animado y crítico de la manera de existir de aquella sociedad, una brillante exposición de las impresiones producidas por su estudio en el ánimo de un español, y para servir de útil cicerone moral a sus compatriotas; un trazado, risueño y filosófico, de aquellos usos y costumbres, contrapuesto a las nuestras, que tan gráficamente había alcanzado a pintar.
