Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First edition. First edition stated. Overszied hardcover in maroon faux leather boards with spine lettered in gilt. Map endpapers. 158 pp. with bibliography and index of captions and photographs. Fine, tight copy in crisp dust jacket but with two edge chips, one at the bottom of the front panel and the other at the top corner of the rear panel. A pictorial review of the historic Delaware and Lehigh Canals of eastern Pennsylvania. The Lehigh, which ran from Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe) to Easton and the Deleware, which connected Easton and Bristol, were the main transporation system for anthracite coal in the 19th century. The development of the railroads as well as the decline in anthracite demand as a fuel, eventually put the canals out of buisness but not until the 1930s. Hundreds of vintage photographs are reproduced in this volume.
