Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark on all sides. Two very light waterstains on bottom edge of sheet. This captivating print is a rare proof impression of Francois Anne David's celebrated print depicting a bustling herb market in Amsterdam. Francois Anne David was a highly regarded engraver working in Paris at the close of the eighteenth century. Born in 1741, David garnered a reputation as a talented portrait engraver. He was the master of J. P. Lebas and a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon from 1802 to 1819. He was an esteemed member of the Academy in Rouen and in Berlin, and his prints can be found in some the most noted European museums. This delightful genre scene is regarded as one of his finest engravings. From the collection of Frederic R. Halsey, a famous New York print collector, who was active during the latter part of the 19th century. (10,7 x 13,2 inch).Source unknown, to be determined.Made by 'Jean George Wille' after 'Gabriel Metzu'. Jean George Wille (BIEBERTAL, 1715 - PARIS, 1808) was a German, French engraver. He had by 1755 gained French citizenship and membership in the Académie Royale. Appointed an Academician in 1761, Wille stopped producing portrait engravings soon afterward, his failing eyesight not allowing him to work on portraits with his usual meticulous technique. As 'graveur du roi' and also engraver to the King of Denmark and the Emperor of Germany, Wille's reputation reached its peak in the years before the French Revolution. His studio in Paris was a centre of printmaking and a meeting place for artists, collectors and dealers, and he was himself active in the art trade. Gabriël Metsu (16291667) was a Dutch painter of history paintings, still lifes, portraits, and genre works. He was "a highly eclectic artist, who did not adhere to a consistent style, technique, or one type of subject for long periods." Only 14 of his 133 works are dated.Condition: Good, given age. good, image itself not effected, tears at all sides restored with museumtape, but still visible in margin pieces of paper missing below and filled in the reverse with old paper, drop of glue in margin near the arm of the maid, some small holes in text margin and one in foot of the rabbit, piece of upper right corner missing, no margin.
