Technic: Steel engraving, colorit: colored, condition: Very good, size (in cm): 14 x 8,5, A Portrait of James Cook. Captain James Cook, (1728?1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years' War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. This helped bring Cook to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This notice came at a crucial moment in both Cook's career and the direction of British overseas exploration, and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages. In three voyages Cook sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas of the globe. He mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean in greater detail and on a scale not previously achieved. As he progressed on his voyages of discovery he surveyed and named features, and recorded islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. He displayed a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in adverse conditions. Cook was killed in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779. He left a legacy of scientific and geographical knowledge which was to influence his successors well into the 20th century and numerous memorials worldwide have been dedicated to him.

Original hand-coloured engraving. Plate Size: 28 cm x 19.4 cm. Sheet Size: 31.6 cm x 25.6 cm. Original map. Very good conditions but with some foxing towards sheet edges. A very detailed and interesting collection of maps of the volcanic islands found in the seas of the Atlantic Ocean. Included are the Canaries, Azores, Italian heel and Sicily, the Antilles, Iceland, Greece. Mountains rivers and the major towns and cities are identified on the eleven maps. A number of miniature but noteworthy scenes and vignettes are also included. The explosion of the volcano on 'Ferdinandea' in 'Die Liparischen Inseln' (Graham Island in the Mediterranean Sea) in 1831 is shown. The Somma volcano of Mount Vesuvius is depicted. The smoldering Icelandic volcano Eyafiäl (Eyjafjallajökull) is also engraved on the map. Etna and the Val del Bove is also pictured on the map. A beautiful example of the fine, precise German engraving style of the mid-19th Century. Joseph Meyer (May 9, 1796 - June 27, 1856) was a German industrialist and publisher, most noted for his encyclopedia, Meyers Konversations-Lexikon. Besides successfully investing the burgeoning German railway industry, Meyer operated very successfully as a publisher, employing a system of serial subscription to publications, which was new at that time. To this end he founded a company, Bibliographisches Institut, in Gotha in 1826. It published several editions of the Bible, works of classical literature ("Miniatur-Bibliothek der deutschen Classiker", "Groschen-Bibliothek"), atlases, the world in pictures on steel engravings ("Meyers Universum", 183361, 17 volumes in 12 languages with 80,000 subscribers all over Europe), and an encyclopaedia, ("das Grosse Conversations-Lexikon für die gebildeten Stände"; see Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, 183955, 52 volumes). His company grew substantially, and in 1828 he moved it from Gotha to Hildburghausen, where he died thirty years later. (Wikipedia) Sprache: deutsch.
