  • Illustrated wrappers with flaps, 8vo, 192 pp, ills. From the preface: "This study of the Sydenham Society and its successor, the New Sydenham Society, arose from a purely practical problem, the cataloguing of their books. During the sixty-eight years of their existence (1843-1911), these Societies produced some 230 volumes of work by highly important authors. Addison, Billroth, Charcot and Koch are just four examples and many of the entries marked 'English translation' in Garrison & Morton's Medical bibliography belong to this collection. But the Sydenham Society never provided a bibliography or a cumulative index for its books; while that issued by the New Sydenham Society in 1911 has obvious imperfections, notably in not having a list of its books arranged in order of publication. Furthermore, the history of the two Societies was by no means clear. The plan of the book follows from this background. Chapter I is a history of the two Societies which, though closely related, had rather different aims. Chapter II describes their books and atlases with notes on points of historical or bibliographical interest such as the original title and the dates of its editions.Chapter III describes the surviving Annual Reports and gives their locations (many are still missing); other ephemera like circulars (this list is almost certainly incomplete); and Portraits of Presidents, possibly the rarest substantial item issued by either Society. Chapter IV contains the Indexes." As New.
