Early Jenkins edition, of this very scarce mystery anthology by the Scottish author first published in Edinburgh in 1881. M'Govan was one of a series of Victorian authors who published crime stories loosely based on contemporary cases, and contributed to the sense of titillating glamor that urban danger would be further expanded by Arthur Conan Doyle in his Holmes & Watson stories. These "retired" detective stories invariably included standard plots of petty crime, burglary, somnambulism, memerism, and other mystery concepts of the mid-Victorian period. His 1878 Brought to Bay appears as No. 9 on the Queen's Quorum Important Detective Crime Fiction Checklist.
