Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: Dent. 1936. Publisher's green cloth lettered in pink to the spine and upper board, in the attractive dust jacket designed by C. Walter Hodges. The publisher's retained copy with 'file' stamp to front endpaper, file copy sticker beneath front flap, and 'file copy' hole-punched at half-title and title pages. The contents otherwise fine. The dust jacket unclipped (7s 6d net) and complete, the corners and spine tips with a few tiny chips and nicks, some rubbing, the lettering to spine perhaps a little faded, but a very handsome copy overall. A bit of a single-person epic charting the life and times of one man, 'the story of Michael from his birth in 1891, through childhood, adolescence, working-days, and wartime'. Probably autobiographicalGibbs, a pseudonym of Joseph Walter Cove, was also born 1891 and served in the First World War though not as a flag-waver. Little else is known of him; he wrote a small sample of novels for Dent, and wrote a handful of biographies, all the while working as an English teacher in a modest Surrey middle-school. He is said to have always wanted to split from that life, but never could do, and Walter Hodges' central figure here seems to capture such a man. Scarce in the jacket.

Loosely autobiographical account of Ballantyne's own time with the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada. Its success prompted a series of excellent stories of adventure for the young with which this prolific Scottish author's name is popularly associated. In the very center of the great continent of North America, far removed from the abodes of civilized men, and about twenty miles to the south of Lake Winnipeg, exists a colony composed of Indians, Scotsmen, and French-Canadians, which is known by the name of Red River Settlement.
