First impression of the first edition in English. Translated from the Czech by Ewald Osers. Jacket design by Michael Harvey. ***Very good in mauve cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Top edge of text-block slightly darkened. Internally also very good with a previous owner's name in black ink to the top of the front free endpaper. Please note that a previous owner has marked out a paragraph in ink and the mark extends to the fore-edge of the page block [please see scans]. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour-printed dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's printed price of 25s net. The dustwrapper is complete without any chips or tears - just the top corner of the front flap is creased. A few sporadic foxing spots, and a small ink mark to the front panel. Orange titles to the spine of the dustwrapper are slightly faded. ***204mm x 138mm. 224 pages. ***'During the wave of arbitrary mass arrests that afflicted the Communist countries of Eastern Europe under Stalin a few years after the Second World War, Jiri Mucha, one of Czechoslovakia's best known writers, suddenly found himself in prison. After months of solitary confinement, during which the authorities did their best to break his nerve, he was sentenced to six years' imprisonment. This book is the diary he kept during the first year of his sentence, served in a coal mine. It was written at intervals in small notebooks kept hidden down the pit and smuggled out piecemeal by a friendly miner. ***It is a shocking but nonetheless humorous record of the world in which he found himself, which he shared with men of all backgrounds and every type of political and non-political offence. The picture he gives us is of humanity reduced to its elements through deprivation and suffering. A stubborn belief that, in spite of everything, life can be a source of joy and inextinguishable interest, and a sense of what is ephemeral and what enduring, saved Mucha from bitterness and self-pity and helped to preserve his human dignity in a nightmare world. ***Jiri Mucha was born in Prague, the son of Alphonse Mucha, the Art Nouveau artist. he was brought up in Prague, Paris and New York, and studied literature and medicine in Prague and Pars. When the Second World War broke out, he joined the Czech division of the French Army, was evacuated to Britain in 1940 and enlisted in the R.A.F. Later he served as B.B.C. war correspondent in North Africa, the Middle East, Burma, China, Italy and north-western Europe. ***In London, he joined the group of writers contributing to John Lehmann's New Writing and helped to launch Daylight. His collected short stories, The Problems of Liuetenant Knap, were published by the Hogarth Press, and translated into many languages. After the war he returned to Czechoslovakia and published several novels and his war diary, Fire Braves Fire, before his arrest for alleged espionage in 1951. Since his release in 1954,he has published Black and White New York, the novel Probable Face, a volume of short stories, and two books on the Art Nouveau.'' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***First impression of the first edition in English, complete in its original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
