Que…sto sembra suggerirci la fotografia di copertina, con quella porta chiusa a delimitare uno spazio incompiuto da cui emergono fantasmatiche memorie. Il libro ricostruisce un periodo poco esplorato (l'ultimo trentennio dell'Ottocento) del manicomio di Bologna e si sofferma sulla nascita degli istituti psico-pedagogici in Italia, avvenuta sul finire del XIX secolo, mettendo in evidenza gli interessi diversi che hanno concorso a sancire, senza l'ausilio di saperi solidi e scientificamente comprovati, la differenza fra normalità e patologia. La terza parte del libro è centrata sulla storia di tre persone che hanno trascorso molto tempo - troppo tempo - nei manicomi di Bologna e Imola e nel Ricovero per alienati cronici di Budrio. Memorie che permettono di ricostruire la storia poco conosciuta di istituzioni totali e le vicende di persone che si stagliano dall'oblio: proprio quei luoghi deputati a disumanizzare e reificare le sofferenze delle persone diventano occasione per restituire loro un'identità soggettiva. Memorie che vogliono richiamare l'attenzione di tutti sul contributo che ognuno di noi porta con il proprio impegno, sia esso fatto di presenze o assenze nella co-costruzione del proprio luogo di vita e dei diversi manicomi che lo popolano.
