Sein Geburtsname lautet Paul Heinrich Dietrich Holbach. Berühmtheit erlangte sein Buch System der Natur, das er 1770 unter dem Namen des zu der Zeit bereits seit zehn Jahren verstorbenen Jean-Baptiste de Mirabaud veröffentlichte. In diesem Werk trat er ausdrücklich für den Atheismus ein und betrachtete die Natur als materialistisch-deterministisch wirkende Kette von Prozessen. Holbachs Pariser Haus war ein Treffpunkt und ein wichtiges Zentrum des Gedankenaustauschs unter den Aufklärungsphilosophen.
