Recentemente materiais de seda regenerados têm sido usados para formar uma variedade de biomateriais como géis, esponjas e filmes para aplicações médicas. Particularmente a fibroina de seda tem sido cada vez mais estudada para novas aplicações biomédicas devido à biocompatibilidade, à lenta degradação e às notáveis propriedades mecânicas do material.
