A manuscript made by James MacGregor, Vicar of Fortingall in Perthshire, and Dean of Lismore in Argyll, probably under the patronage of the Campbells of Glenorchy. A scholarly introduction by James Skene, and a selection of 69 Gaelic poems. The poems are given in three forms: (1) their original Gaelic form (as they appear in the manuscript in their curious orthography); (2) in standard Gaelic orthography; (3) in English translation. Useful notes throughout. Ex library copy with usual wear marks, stamp on half-title page, damage to the front endpaper, but stitching is sound. Light pencil annotation to each poem, usefully helping the reader to connect the Gaelic original to its translation.

Near Fine Hardback Original, Half bound in leather with dyed red text-block (a few minor spots to endpapers and one small inscription to the half-title page, else Fine). A compilation of poetry made by James MacGregor (circa 1480-1551), Dean of Lismore and notary public working in Fortingall, Perthshire. The volume contains mostly Gaelic poetry, besides some miscellaneous items in Scots, Latin and English. The Gaelic texts are not written in the Gaelic hand and spelling that was common at the time. Instead, both orthography and handwriting are based on 16th-century Scots writing, which adds a special linguistic interest to the volume. It allows us an insight into the writer's own regional Perthshire pronunciation, which would normally have been hidden behind the classical Gaelic spelling.
