Description: First edition of this major Soviet monograph on the earliest stages of human settlement in Northeastern Asia, covering Paleolithic and Mesolithic sites from Siberia east to Chukotka and Kamchatka, including the Dyuktai Cave, Belkachi I, Sumnagin I, and Ust-Timpton sites. Published by the Yakutian Branch, Siberian Division, USSR Academy of Sciences, Institute of Language, Literature and History. Text in Russian. PRESENTATION COPY: Inscribed on the front flyleaf by the author to American archaeologist J. Jeffrey Flenniken, signed "Yu. Mochanov," with a note referencing his time in Yakutia. This copy was presented during a 1978 visit to the Soviet Union by a group of American archaeologists funded by a National Geographic Society grant, which included Flenniken along with A. P. Okladnikov (Novosibirsk), G. Medvedev (Irkutsk), M. Aksenov (Irkutsk), and Yu. Mochanov (Yakutsk). Flenniken subsequently published "The Paleolithic Dyuktai Pressure Blade Technique of Siberia" (Arctic Anthropology, 1987), in which this monograph is a primary source and the 1978 trip is acknowledged. The trip was also connected to the September 1979 National Geographic article "The Search for the First Americans." An Aeroflot Soviet baggage tag, apparently from the journey, is loosely inserted ? a remarkable piece of provenance ephemera. A well-documented association copy linking two key figures in the archaeology of the Beringian Stone Age. Seller Notes: Scarce original Russian-language first edition. Documented presentation copy inscribed by the author to American archaeologist J. Jeffrey Flenniken during a 1978 National Geographic-funded expedition to the Soviet Union. Directly connected to Flenniken's 1987 Arctic Anthropology article on Dyuktai pressure blade technique and the September 1979 National Geographic article "The Search for the First Americans." Aeroflot baggage tag loosely inserted. A unique copy with interesting provenance.
