Nach diesem Maßstab wollte er Fehlentwicklungen der Christentumsgeschichte und in der Kirche seiner Zeit überwinden. Seine Betonung des gnädigen Gottes, seine Predigten und Schriften und seine Bibelübersetzung, die Lutherbibel, veränderten die von der römisch-katholischen Kirche dominierte Gesellschaft in der frühen Neuzeit nachhaltig. Entgegen Luthers Absicht kam es zu einer Kirchenspaltung, zur Bildung evangelisch-lutherischer Kirchen und weiterer Konfessionen des Protestantismus. In der Lutherforschung ist umstritten, wann Luther das Prinzip der Gerechtigkeit Gottes sola gratia (allein aus Gnade) zuerst entdeckte und formulierte. In einer späteren Eigenaussage beschrieb Luther diesen Wendepunkt als unerwartete Erleuchtung, die ihm in seinem Arbeitszimmer im Südturm des Wittenberger Augustinerklosters widerfahren sei. Manche datieren dieses Turmerlebnis auf die Jahre 1511 bis 1513, andere um 1515 oder um 1518, wieder andere nehmen eine allmähliche Entwicklung der reformatorischen Wende an.
