Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. A large, almost encyclopedic book about the American West, The front flap on the dust jacket states that "To Assure the depth and accuracy essential to a book of this scope, ten distinguisehed western authorities were invited to participate in its preparation, not as advisers or editors but as writers, each on his own specialty. Their combined knowledge and perspective have nbrought together in a masterful narrative the most magnificent array of historical fact, egend and lore about the West ever assembled in one volume." The book is illustrated primarily by reproductions of drawings and paintings, with an occasional photograph, most of which are printed against a colored background (green, yellow, blue, red, etc.). Sections are: 1. Opening of the West: Explorers and Mountain Men, by Dale Morgan; 2. Transportation in the American West, by Oscar Osburn Winther; 3. Treasures of the American West, by Oscar Lewis; 4. Indians and Soldiers of the American West, by Don Russell; 5. The Law of the American West, by Wayne Gard; 6. Cowboys and Horses of the American West, by Ramon F. Adams; 7. Guns of the American West, by Robert Easton; 8. Wild Life of the American West, by Natt N. Dodge; 9. A Sampler of Western Folklore and Songs, by B. A. Botkin; and 10. A Gallery of Western Art, by Clarence P. Hornung. Section 9 includes sheet music to many songs, and Section 10 includes reproductions of many famous paintings, some in color. Includes "Suggestions for Additional Reading," an index, and a page of brief paragraph biographies of each section author. 8½ x 11 inches, 608 pages. Book is in very good condition, but the dust jacket has many chips and tears around the edges, some of which were previously mended with scotch tape on the inside. Unusually heavy, will require extra postage.
