Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Vincente Minelli (illustrator). About the author >>> Giacomo Girolamo Casanova (2 April 1725 - 4 June 1798) was an Italian adventurer and author from the Republic of Venice. His autobiography, Histoire de ma vie (Story of My Life), is regarded as one of the most authentic sources of the customs and norms of European social life during the 18th century. As was not uncommon at the time, Casanova, depending on circumstances, used more or less fictitious names such as baron or count of Farussi (the name of his mother) or Chevalier de Seingalt (pronounced Saint-Galle, as in French). He often signed his works Jacques Casanova de Seingalt after he began writing in French following his second exile from Venice. He has become so famous for his often complicated and elaborate affairs with women that his name is now synonymous with "womanizer". He associated with European royalty, popes and cardinals, along with luminaries such as Voltaire, Goethe and Mozart. He spent his last years in Bohemia as a librarian in Count Waldstein's household, where he also wrote the story of his life. This edition of his memoirs is edited by Joeph Monet with Vincent Minelli providing the illustrations. Faults? the dj worn at head & tail of spine, torn upper right corner (see the pics), plastic protection now. 290pp with full pg illust (bw), Size: 22.5cm. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Vincente Minelli (illustrator). 1st Edition. From the recently auctioned collection of Caroline Riesor Rau and David Wallerstein--this copy is inscribed by the illustrator (and future husband of Judy Garland)--Vincent Minelli to Caroline Riesor Rau, " Not nearly nice enough for you but it will do to put gin glasses on-Vincente Minelli"--on the half title page. Very rare to find a signed copy by Minelli--signed in 1930 before he was well known and before Judy Garland starred in the Wizard of Oz in 1939. 7 Beardsley like wiid-cut black and white semi erotic drawings. A very good copy without the rare dustjacket. Burgundy cloth boards with silver lettering and decorations on front board and spine--although the spine is just a bit faded. The burgundy cloth on the rear boards has some light streaking--uncut paper edges. A clean copy and mostly tight hinges. Caroline Rau was married to David Wallerstein--who was on the board of directors of Disney, ABC and later on McDonalds. He was a persona friend of Walt Disney and his wife was a well known Chicago socialite. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Couverture rigide. "Lamarck's geology was closely connected with his work in other fields. His Hydrogéologie, which grew out of a 1799 memoir presented to the Academy and his work in invertebrate paleontology, was published in 1802. He originally intended it to be a much broader work, as the manuscript shows () It was to have been a terrestrial physics including meteorology, geology, and biology, a term he coined. He had not only a sense of interrelation of fields but, within geology, a vision of the whole. He saw all of nature working according to similar principles : general natural tendencies producing gradual change over long periods of time, with local circumstances explaining the irregularities. His approach to geology was similar to that in other sciences : concern with the general principles and contempt for those who interested themselves too much with the specifics". Cf. Leslie J. Burlingame, notice "Lamarck", in : D.S.B. Bel exemplaire. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition, very scarce, of this important work. Contemporary-style half speckled fawn calf binding, smooth spine decorated with triple gilt fillets, green shagreen title label, small vellum corners, marbled paper boards, bookplate pasted onto a pastedown, red edges, modern binding. A restored loss to the left margin of the title page. Hydrogéologie contains Lamarck's geological observations gathered during his travels in Germany, Hungary, and France. Its principal merit lies in demonstrating the considerable importance of plants and animals as agents of geological transformation. It is in this work that the word biology appears for the first time, on page 8, which Lamarck regarded as an appropriate term for the sciences of life. "Lamarck's geology was closely connected with his work in other fields. His Hydrogéologie, which grew out of a 1799 memoir presented to the Academy and his work in invertebrate paleontology, was published in 1802. Brunet, III, 1824 ; Sommervogel, V, 1211.
