A portfolio of 12 plates, reproduced from the 1837 edition. The plates measure 40cm by 32cm, and are in excellent condition. The contents are housed in a white paper folder (with the titling printed on the front cover). The folder has some creasing to the extremities. The folder is housed in a cardboard case, with a reproduction… of the title page of the 1572 edition on the front of the case. There is a page of introduction, from which I quote: ". enlarged reproductions of the prints illustrating the most famous edition of os Lusiadas. The work of a portuguese Maecenas, Margado de Mateus, this resulted from the collaboration of great artists of the period, the painters Fragonard, Desenne, Gerard, the engravers Lignon, Forssell, Masard, Dartman, Laurent, Bovinet, Pigeot, Forster, Richomme, Toschi. was printed with specially designed and cast type, under the supervision of Baron de Gerard.

These have some general wear and a previous owner's sticker, but the prints themselves are neat and tidy. Size about 41 x 33 cm. Contains the 12 fascimile…prints of the edition of Lusiadas by Morgado de Mateus, commemorating the 4th centenary of the publication of Lusiadas (1572). Two portraits of the author and ten plates depicting scenes from the cantos.
