Ihm stand die schwierige Aufgabe bevor, ohne Anleitung den Marsch nach der Jaundestation anzutreten, wo er ohne nenneswerte Schwierigkeiten Ende November 1889 eintraf. Während seiner Stationierung in Kamerun unternahm Morgen zwei Forschungsreisen. Am 9. Dezember 1889 verließ er Jaunde, überschritt den Sannaga und erreichte die südlichen Grenzstämme von Adamawa. Von hier wandte er sich nach Westen, entdeckte den Mbam, den bedeutendsten Nebenfluss des Sannaga, und erreichte Malimba.
