Paperback. Condition: Very Good. During the nineteenth century it became increasingly common for merchant service masters to take their wives to sea. Among the first, and most accomplished literature about this subject, is Abby Jane Morrell's account of a voyage between 1829 and 1831 that took her from New England to the South Pacific. Apart from the descriptions of exotic places, much of the interest in this book is the traditional, centuries-old world of the sailor as seen through the eyes of a thoughtful and well-educated woman. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The narrative of a voyage in the Schooner Antarctica 189, 1830, 1831 . Edited with and introduction by Vincent McInerney. Abby Jane Morrell travelled with her husband Benjamin from New England to the south Pacific. It is an accomplshed account of her experiences on such a voyage. Benjamin also wrote a journal but Abby's account is considered more accurate. Usually when women were on frigates they were labelled Hen Frigates. This was a diferent situation. The text used is that of the 1833 Harper New York edition, said to have been ghostwritten by Samuel Knapp from a memoir by Abby Morrell. The original was 67,000 words and was reduced to 40,000 words to make it more readable.There are other titles in the Seafarers' voices, this book being number 7. 185pp inc notes.20pp inctroduction. During the nineteenth century it became more common for women to join their husbands on voyages, and Abby insisted on accompanying her husband on his fourth voyage. They left America for the Pacific in 1829 on board the Antarctic, which visited the Auckland Islands and Pacific Islands in search of commercial gain, before returning via the Azores in 1831. First published in 1833, this is Abby's account of their journey. It was ghostwritten by the American author Samuel Knapp (1783?1838) and followed the publication of Benjamin Morrell's own account as part of A Narrative of Four Voyages (also reissued in this series). It includes an account of the violent conflicts with the inhabitants of some of the Pacific Islands, and also contains Abby's comments on the 'amelioration of the condition of American Seamen'.
