Graves, Morris (American 1910-2001). TWO BIRDS. Brown Ink on tan paper, not dated. Though Signed in pencil, lower right, the signature proved fugitive and was lost during conservation. Highly simplified and abstracted forms on a large open field of tan paper, producing an effect which is both powerful and funny at the same time. Graves produced a large number of these bird form drawings and sketches on this same thin wrapping paper, which becomes brittle with age. There are a few small breaks at the sheet edges, with the whole sheet stabilized with japanese tissue for support.
