Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Hedda Hammer Morrison (Photographer) (illustrator). Dover Reprint. Text/Near New w/tidy, fading (mercifully) highlighting from page 1 thru' 35. Soft cover/VG w/light edge wear & faint surface creasings to front/back. First published in 1948; this is an unabridged and unaltered republication of the original. Excellent consideration of traditional, fine Chinese furniture (excluding lacquer pieces). The book is a true joint effort of four kindred spirits who found themselves in the Peking of 1937 - 1938, on the eve of World War II, but where the Sino-Japanese War had already begun. Basic research was conducted house-to-house, and all photographs were taken then as well. The collaborators are George Kates, the Brooklyn Museum Curator of Oriental Art for the text; his sister Beatrice Kates and friend Caroline Bieber selected the pieces and took measurements; and Hedda Morrison took the photographs. Peking's city walls are now gone and houses of old replaced by highrisers, giving this study an added historical dimension. Strong copy despite highlighting.

Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve. Kates was born in Cincinnati to an immigrant couple who traveled Europe and South America to facilitate his father's booming export business. French, Spanish and German came easily to him, and assisted his study of history at Harvard, graduating summa cum laude. He then entered a doctoral program at Oxford before consulting for Adolph Zukor on historical accuracy Paramount movies. His growing interest in Chinese poetry led to self-study in Chinese language, a passion that prompted his move to Peking, 1933, where he avoided the expats in the Legation Quarter and immersed himself, a la ECT Werner, in an age-old lifestyle in the Tartar City. The narrative at hand documents those years, exploring abandoned imperial halls and warehouses, while receiving language tutorials and befriending Pu Ju, the resident of Prince Kung's palace garden. The former was the subject of his article in Monumenta Serica, 1940. We might also mention that Kates disabused the accepted notion that the Forbidden City was established in the Ming Dynasty. Instead, he proved it dated to the Yuan Dynasty.
