Cada tomo sera una novela completa, independiente cada obra, sin perjuicio, no obstante, de que los personajes pendientes de solucion en una, pasen a desenvolverse en otra, y aun los de relativa importancia en la anterior, lleguen a ser los caracteres mas salientes de la composicion inmediata.En La familia Unzuazu, Liberato, un esclavo, y su duena remueven las relaciones sociales en una escena violenta y extatica: Un movimiento que ahora hizo Ana Maria descubriole, caida la blanca media hasta el tobillo, el desnudo y torneado nacimiento de la pierna.Liberato sintio como una vaporosa nube que le cegaba. Sin animo para resistir la propulsiva fuerza que le impelia, extendio el brazo palpando suavemente aquellas carnes tentadoras. y esto fue ya mas de la medida. Extremeciole un punzante calofrio que le erizo todo el cuerpo, al contacto de la piel sedosa y tibia de su ama, y mas enajenado que consciente de sus actos, cayo enardecido sobre la beldad reverenciada, y estrechandola convulso entre sus brazos sacio con encarnizamiento el apetito brutal no sospechado, que tan subita y bestialmente se manifestaba. El frenesi del barbaro no encontraba oposicion por parte de la victima, y esto debio excitar su torpe sensualismo, hasta que, finalmente rendido en su locura, sin alientos quedo como fundido sobre la pequena alfombra y abrazado al cuerpo de su ama.Y este climax tiene como trasfondo la Cuba del siglo XIX y el ambiente de los nanigos, libertos africanos que practicaban un codigo etico basado en ritos ancestrales. Sofia se enfrenta a la represion de la sociedad colonial no solo como esclava sino tambien como mujer. Es una joven de gran belleza, que vive y es educada en la casa de sus patrones como si fuese una esclava mas.Como sucede en otras novelas de su tiempo, el refinamiento de sus rasgos y el color blanco de su piel despiertan sentimientos contradictorios. Se sospecha que es hija del patron y que podria, por ello, tener derechos sobre la herencia, por lo que es expulsada de la casa principal y se le condena a trabajar en las duras labores de la hacienda de sus amos.Aqui el tema de la esclavitud aflora nuevamente en la literatura cubana a traves de las obras de Martin Morua, de una manera mas descarnada ya que revela profundas implicaciones personales de su autor, hombre de raza de negra comprometido con la igualdad racial de Cuba.Cabe concluir diciendo que el asunto racial en Cuba, ya se habia abordado en Cecilia Valdes, de Cirilo Villaverde, cuya primera version se publico en 1839, y en otras muchas otras novelas cubanas de finales del siglo XIX.
