A spectacular, comprehensive first survey of New Jersey schoolgirl needlework created from the 1720s through the years immediately preceding the Civil War. The first known "band sampler" was was worked in 1726 by Mary Fitz Randolph at age 16 in Woodbridge, Middlesex County. The Morven exhibition, which this catalogue accompanied, provided an artistic mapping of needlework done from all 20 existing New Jersey counties, Sussex to Cape May during the period. Importantly, each example is accompanied by biographical sketches of the young creators where known, an area of information often overlooked in studies of their work.
