1 lettre autographe signée 2 pp. In-12 carré 17 octobre "1879" [lire 1897] Encre noire sur papier légèrement bleuté. Bon. Première page légèrement insolée. Lettrede l'affichiste et illustrateur Alfons Mucha : "En vous remerciant de votre aimable lettre je m'empresse de vous dire que je me ferais un plaisir en me mettant à votre disposition pour la recherche d'une couverture de votre journal. Seulement dans le cas, où la reproduction serait nécessaire par la lythographie [sic], je suis obligé de faire tirer les couleurs dans la maison Champenois(Bolvd St. Michel) avec laquelle je suis lié. Mais pour une autre reproduction, soit par similigravure ou autre, je suis complètement libre et vous n'avez que choisir la maison qui vous conviendrait.Si vous voulez m'envoyer de détails nécessaires, je tâcherai de vous montre quelque chose bientôt [.]". Mucha avait emménagé rue du Val-de-Grâce vers 1894. Son précédent atelier se trouvait au 8, rue de la Grande-Chaumière, adresse restée célèbre parce que Mucha y hébergea Gauguin alors que ce dernier préparait sa grande exposition chez Durand-Ruel de novembre 1893. Ferdinand Champenois avait acquis en décembre 1874 une société d'impression-édition spécialisée dans les travaux en chromolithographie. Elle deviendra en 1878 la société Champenois & Cie, son siège situé au 66 boulevard Saint-Michel.En 1894, Mucha avait réalisé pour Sarah Bernhardt l'affiche de la pièce de Victorien Sardou, Gismonda, mais, la Divine ayant un différend avec l'imprimeur Lemercier, décida de confier désormais ses travaux à Champenois. Mucha engagé par un contrat de 6 ans avec Sarah Bernhardt pour 6 nouvelles affiches, se trouva de ce fait mis en relations avec Champenois qui, en 1896, lui fit à son tour signer un contrat de 10 ans. C'est à cet engagement qu'il est fait allusion dans la lettre. Affichiste, illustrateur, graphiste, peintre et professeur d'arttchèque. Il fut une des grandes figures deArt nouveau.

Autograph Letter Signed, "Alfons," to his sisters Anna and Angela ("Milá Anicka a Andelka"), in Czech, concerning costumes for a ball, with small ink drawings. The drawings, sketches illustrating details of costumes, drawn near lower edges of first two pages: the first, two views of a dress's short sleeves, ¾x2¼ inches; the second, a walking stick with spherical head.[] Anna wants to be a painter. Nice costume! However, it could be put to better use, fancied up more . . . . The dress especially . . . is good, except for the sleeves here. They ought to be short, elbow-length, and about this wide: Anyway, you can tell from the sketches I've included. . . . "Instead of a hat on her head, a palette with brushes would do very nicely, accompanied by a tasteful hairdo of course. Instead of fringe around the hem of the dress there are brushes tied on (. . . made of cotton, like tassels). She must have a cane in hand (a painter's cane [drawing]), and she can have a book as well, if it's empty. I can put a few faces in there for her. We'll put a gold thread with a tassel on her head with the palette . . . . I can fancy up the hall a bit. "I was in Vienna shopping for . . . paints . . . but my departure kept being postponed . . . . "I'll bring my costume with me, the one I wore here last year at the costume ball . . . . If they get a mask and full Pierrot costume . . . save that for me too, I could joke around for two hours in that costume, do you understand? []".

Auf der Bildoberfläche bei schrägem Lichteinfall schwache Fleckchen und Schabstellen zu erkennen, insgesamt sehr guter Zustand. - Mucha (1860 Ivanice - 1939 Prag) war einer der bedeutenden Jugendstilkünstler, bekannt insbesondere durch seine Plakate mit Sarah Bernard. Schon während seines Studiums in Paris freundet er sich mit dem Brauch an, Aktzeichnungen nach Modellfotografien anzufertigen. Das Modell posiert genau nach der vom Künstler vorgegebenen Instruktion. Trotzdem verleiht M. den Arrangements Lockerheit und authenthische Kraft.
