Original dark brown pebbled cloth lightly rubbed, gilt stamped decoration and lettering upon spine remains bright but not vibrant, spine ends and board corners bumped. Three light stains upon toned top edge; some foxing upon fore-edge and bottom edge. Appleton's foxed promotional sheet for Louisa Muhlbach's historical novels tipped-in at front free endpaper and which summarizes this novel as "illustrative of the period of Napoleon's invasion of Germany. The beautiful Queen of Prussia, the idol of Germany, occupies a prominent place." Old color jester illustration appears to have been stenciled onto the front flyleaf's blank recto with associated toning to page. B/w frontispiece retains tissue guard. Double-column text throughout with two b/w plate illustrations on unpaged leaves. Short closed tear at fore-edge margin of pages 203-204. Mostly light foxing to interior pages.
