Raixa és tot un exemple de combinació del medi natural amb l'arquitectura al servei de l'estètica i de la història. 1 ara el casal, i el territori i el paisatge que l'envolta, han esdevengut patrimoni d'una societat que vol mantenir un bon nivell de qualitat de vida i de desenvolupament, sense deixar de conservar la cultura i el patrimoni. Raixa és el lloc adient per captar la lliçó dels geògrafs i dels escriptors: el paisatge està amarat de connotacions culturals. Raixa pot esser considerat un espai carregat de paisatge amb història. Hi trobarem la petjada dels mestres musulmans, experts en el recorregut domesticat de l'aigua, concretat en canals i safareigs, l'arquitectura tradicional de la casa mallorquina, personificada en la clastra i en els enginys de la tafona, entre molts d'altres exemples, i els aires classicistes, més cosmopolites i elitistes, en els elements de la vil·la italianesca sospirada pel cardenal. L'ombra porprada del cardenal Despuig plana damunt la bella contrada de Raixa. Aquest home, que visqué des d'una posició d'avantguarda una època irrepetible de transformacions arreu d'Europa de finals del segle XVIII i dels primers anys del segle XIX i que, malgrat la seva situació privilegiada, creia en l'obertura de l'aleshores anquilosada Mallorca, és l'artífex de la Raixa moderna. D'alguna manera, la seva darrera voluntat, plasmada per mà de notari, de fer del seu llegat objecte de gaudi popular i d'estudi cultural i artístic, ara és, en bona part, realitat. El llibre Raixa: Història i patrimoni, il·lustrat amb belles fotografies de Donald Murray i amb dibuixos i fotografies antigues, s'estructura en dos grans apartats. La primera part tracta de la història de la possessió, amb notícies sobre els seus propietaris i persones lligades a la finca, i també amb l'aportació de profusió de dades sobre la producció agrícola i forestal. Com era d'esperar, un capítol important d'aquest apartat es dedica a les reformes patrocinades pel Cardenal Antoni Despuig i Dameto, incloent-hi referències sobre el museu d'antiguitats que hi instal·là. Pel que fa a la història, val la pena insistir en aquestes paraules preliminars que he volgut desmuntar alguns tòpics, com la reiterada llista de propietaris del segle XIII aportada pels cronistes tradicionals, que respon a una equivocació, ja que es tracta d'una desconeguda finca denominada també Raixa del pla de Catí o de Sant Jordi. Un altre dels temes tractats normalment amb lleugeresa és la qüestió de la propietat de Raixa en temps del cardenal Despuig. Senzillament, Raixa és una finca vinculada a l'hereu dels Despuig, que és qui porta els títols i l'herència patrimonial principal de la casa; per tant, el propietari era el germà major del Cardenal, Joan Despuig i Dameto, i com a tal apareix als cadastres i documents de propietat.
