Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. DISCONTENT AT THE POLLS; A STUDY OF FARMER AND LABOR PARTIES, 1827-1948, Murray S. Stedman Jr. and Susan W. Stedman, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, 1950. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block is in near fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. There is no bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The brick red cloth boards are in very good condition (spine bumping at top and bottom). The dust jacket is in fairly good condition (edge chipping, fading and discoloring along edges, age-toned inside, discolored spine). 8 ½ x 5 1/2, 190 pages, 14 ounces XX [From the inner flaps] The protest vote, say the authors of this book, has appeared under various party labels, rooted in specific economic and social conditions, and has performed the valuable function in American political life of acting as a vehicle for the expression of discontent, and of popularizing issues at first ignored, later adopted, by the major parties. Beginning with the early working-men's parties of the 1820's, the book examines closely the tactics, strategy, geographical factors, and social and economic background of the various farmer and labor parties, analyzing in detail both Congressional and Presidential elections, including 1948. The principal trends are shown in charts and tables. This volume contains a compilation of voting statistics never before published under one cover, supplemented by public opinion studies appearing in detail for the first time. XX About the authors. Murray S. Stedman, Jr. is assistant professor of political science at Brown University. He is a 1939 graduate of Williams College and received his M.A. from Columbia in 1940 and the Ph.D. from the same university in 1947. From 1941 to 1945 he was in the Army, from which he was discharged with the rank of Captain; following his Army service he was divisional assistant in the Department of State, Washington, and instructor in Columbia College. His wife and co-author of this book, Susan Winter Stedman, is a graduate of Bennington College, 1941. She has been a member of the staff of the Hudson Shore Labor School, the editorial board of Advance, published by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, and the business, labor and agricultural news department of Newsweek. She has also been a member of the editorial staff of Fortune, working on editorial aspects and presentation of the Fortune Survey. She is at present engaged in freelance research and writing.

BeachWilliam Henry Harrison Murray ("Adirondack Murray") is known as the father of the outdoor movement in America and the modern vacation. A passionate advocate for the wilderness and, specifically, the Adirondacks in New York State, Murray was the author of numerous books from the 1860s until his death in the early twentieth century. Among the favorites included: "The Freemasonry of Outdoor Life," "Jack Shooting in a Foggy Night," "The Story that the Keg Told Me," "Henry Herbert's Thanksgiving," and "How John Norton the Trapper Kept His Christmas.".
