History of the White Australia Policy, first published in 1923, is an account of the rise and fall of immigration to Australia from Asia and the Pacific Islands. It was the first detailed examination of the White Australia Policy. It surveys state restrictions on immigration before Federation, the system of indentured labour, and presents a picture of a young community protecting itself from immigration that could have altered its whole character. (book flap) The second edition was a reprint with corrections. This copy was published in New York as part of the Reprint of Economic Classics series.

The aim was to exclude Chinese and other Asian migrants, as well as the Kanakas from South Pacific islands (many of whom had been kidnapped to work in Queensland sugar plantations). This book was originally published in 1923 (being the first publication of Melbourne University Press). The current copy is the corrected reprint of 1967, which was jointly published in London and Melbourne.
