Die Erzählung weist einzelne Elemente auf, die Parallelen zu Nabokovs bedeutendstem Werk Lolita haben. Während Lolita bereits 1955 erstmals veröffentlicht wurde, erschien die Erzählung 1986 posthum unter dem Titel The Enchanter. Es wurde von Vladimir und Véra Nabokovs Sohn Dmitri ins Englische übersetzt, das russische Original wurde erstmals 1991 veröffentlicht. Die Erzählung hat wie Lolita als Hauptfigur einen Mann im mittleren Lebensalter, hier mit Namen Arthur, der pädophile Neigungen hat. Der Protagonist beobachtet in einem Park ein veilchenblau gekleidetes, präpubertäres Mädchen und fühlt sich zu diesem kindlichen Mädchen hingezogen. Kurze Zeit später heiratet er die als ein wenig abstoßend beschriebene verwitwete Mutter des Mädchens, um es täglich sehen zu können. Nach dem Tod der Mutter, die an den Folgen einer Operation stirbt, misslingt eine sexuelle Annäherung in einem Hotelzimmer, und Arthur wirft sich vor einen Lastwagen. Marcel Reich-Ranicki bezeichnete die Erzählung Der Zauberer als ein vor allem psychologisches Porträt, eine scharfsinnige poetische Studie der sexuellen Obsession, gezeigt am Beispiel eines pathologisch veranlagten Mannes. Er nennt es auch ein nachdenkliches und vielschichtiges Prosastück von beängstigender Intensität, bei dem man Gefahr laufe, die Qualität der Erzählung zu unterschätzen, weil auf ihm der Schatten von Nabokovs unvergleichbarem Werk Lolita liege. Vladimir Nabokov (* 10.jul. / 22. April 1899greg. in Sankt Petersburg; gestorben 2. Juli 1977 in Montreux, Schweiz) war ein russisch-amerikanischer Schriftsteller, Literaturwissenschaftler und Schmetterlingsforscher. Er zählt zu den einflussreichsten Erzählern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bekannt wurde Nabokov durch seinen zwölften Roman Lolita, der 1955 erschien und ein Bestseller wurde. Die Verkaufserfolge erlaubten es ihm, seine Professorenstelle an der Cornell-Universität zu kündigen und sich ganz dem Schreiben zu widmen. Das Ehepaar Nabokov kehrte zu Beginn der 1960er Jahre nach Europa zurück und führte zunächst ein nomadisches Hotelleben ohne feste Adresse, bevor es sich dauerhaft im Hotel Palace im schweizerischen Montreux einmietete. Zu den bekanntesten Werken Nabokovs zählen neben Lolita die Romane Pnin, Fahles Feuer und Ada oder Das Verlangen. Dieter Eduard Zimmer (* 24. November 1934 in Berlin-Pankow; gestorben 19. Juni 2020 in Berlin) war ein deutscher Journalist, Autor und Übersetzer. Ab 1989 war Zimmer Herausgeber der deutschen Gesamtausgabe von Vladimir Nabokovs Schriften.
