Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, known by the mononymous pseudonym Nadar, was a French photographer, caricaturist, journalist, novelist, balloonist and proponent of manned flight. In 1858 he became the first person to take aerial photographs. Le Géant (The Giant), inspired Jules Verne's Five Weeks in a Balloon. Nadar was the inspiration for the character of Michael Ardan in Verne's From the Earth to the Moon. [Wikipedia] He launched the world's largest gas balloon, known as Le Géant (Giant). In parts: "D autant mieux venu votre jeune ami (-d abord parce qu avec vous tres aimée Madame) que nous lui croyons avoir déniché des notes qui me paraissent devoir l intéresser, car moi qui ne Chateaubrille [illegible], j y ai été mordu; c est le journal, jour par jour, d une petite amie, quoiqu enfant intime de Chateaubriand. [.] Mais vendredi c est bien long! Vous ne nous ferez pas une petite avance? "Nadar Paris" is printed at the bottom of the card. The two addresses of Nadar are printed on the verso: 51 Rue d'Anjou, 53 Rue de Mathurins. Printed at the top of th…e verso is "1900 Exposition". This was the world's fair in Paris, "Exposition Universelle". The photograph is not dated, but because of the reference to the Exposition, it cannot be earlier than 1900. Comparing the image to dated photographs of Metchnikoff, he looks in his 50s, making the date of the photograph ca. 1900. P. Nadar is Paul Nadar (1856-1939), son of Nadar, the pseudonym of Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (1820-1910), the celebrated portrait photographer in France from 1854-1895. Elie Metchnikoff shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1908 with Paul Ehrlich "in recognition of their work on immunity.". Signed by Author(s).

Vol. I has 52 issues consisting each of 2 pp of text (biography) and a full page portrait printed on recto side… only, with (4) pp preliminary pages (title) and 2 index leaves at the end. Vol. II has 40 issues (numbered 53 ->92) . Complete set of 92 issues of this portrait series published as a supplement to the weekly magazine '' Le Journal Amusant''. It is one of the earliest examples of the use of photography in periodical publishing. It contains in all 92 full page portraits of famous European figures rendered in lithography and based upon a photograph (some of the portrait reproductions are signed in the plate '' Gillot''). The name of the photographer is each time mentioned in the caption underneath.
