[142] leaves, including blanks. Seven mounted reproductions of dress, 82 measured patterns of men's and ladies' garments (drawn chiefly in pencil with occasional ink), 2 anatomical drawings of the human leg and skeleton. Laid in is an 1877 theater ticket on which the tailor has made a tiny scale of 32 numbers, no doubt for help in scaling his patterns. One loose page notes the names and addresses of three clients (presumably), in Swansea, Biggleswade, and Stratford-on-Avon. Ca. 4 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches. The unknown itinerant tailor who kept this hand-drawn pattern book catered chiefly to the country gentry and their servants, as well as military officers and the clergy. He outlined patterns for garments and their parts (such as sleeves and collars), including military coats and jackets, suits of livery, trousers, clerical garb, ladies' hoods, etc. With 19 patterns for horsemen and women: 11 ladies' riding habits, jackets, and trousers; riding breeches; long gaiters for coachman or shooting; frock coats for groom and coachman; legging for groom; and boxcoats for coachman, footman, and groom. A scarce survival, and an appealing document of a little-studied trade. Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate. Good (covers chipped, loose; internally very good and clean) Hardcover (leather-covered boards, original brass clasp).
